About these altitudes

Camp altitudes on the Kilembe Trail are the figures in general use on this route, and are indicative rather than surveyed. Walking times vary too much between groups to publish usefully; your guide paces each day to your party.

  1. Day 1KilembeSine CampMontane forest

    2,596 m

The Kilembe Trail starts on the opposite side of the massif from the Central Circuit, and the early forest here has its own character — different birdlife, different light, and generally quieter than the Nyakalengija side from the first hour.

  2. Day 2Sine CampKiharo CampBamboo

    2,596 m2,977 m

Into the bamboo zone, with the trail narrowing under the canopy in places. This section holds water well after rain, and is a fair introduction to the bog conditions further up the mountain without yet reaching them in earnest.

  3. Day 3Kiharo CampMutinda Lookout, via Mutinda CampHeather & moorland

    2,977 m3,688 m

The climb into the heather zone proper, past Mutinda Camp, finishing with a short, genuine scramble over rock to the lookout itself. On a clear day this is the payoff view of the trip — down into the valley and across the surrounding ridgelines — though cloud cover is common and not something we can promise around.

  4. Day 4Mutinda Camp areaKilembeMontane forest

    3,688 m

A full descent back through Kiharo and Sine to the trailhead — a long day, but downhill, and a good final look at the vegetation zones in reverse.
