Mount Stanley

Mount Stanley is the highest of the Rwenzori's six massifs and the one that matters most to visiting trekkers, because it carries Margherita Peak — at 5,109 metres, the third highest point in Africa and the summit almost everyone on this mountain is ultimately walking towards.

The massif, not just the summit

"Mount Stanley" refers to the whole glaciated block, not a single point. It carries several named summits arranged around the Stanley Plateau, of which Margherita is the highest. The others are lower satellite peaks on the same massif, reached by parties who have already made the technical crossing onto the ice.

Most people who say they are "climbing Mount Stanley" mean, specifically, reaching Margherita Peak. That is the summit our treks are built around, and it has its own dedicated page with full detail on the route, the glacier crossing and who the climb suits.

Why it carries the range's only glacial summit

Mount Stanley is the tallest of the six massifs by a comfortable margin, and altitude is what keeps ice on the equator. The other five massifs top out low enough, relative to Stanley, that their summits no longer hold permanent glaciers in the way Stanley's upper reaches still do. That is the practical reason Margherita is the only Rwenzori summit requiring rope and crampons, and why every other peak in the range is reachable on foot alone.

Naming

Like most of the range's summits, the names here come from the Duke of Abruzzi's 1906 expedition, which surveyed the massif properly for the first time and named its principal points after the Italian royal family — Margherita for the queen, and the plateau and satellite features for other figures from the same expedition and era.

Getting there

Both main Rwenzori trails give access to Mount Stanley's summit area: the Central Circuit from Nyakalengija and the Kilembe Trail from the south-west. Neither route avoids the technical section — the glacier crossing to Margherita is the same regardless of which side you approach from.
