Rwenzori Weather and Climate

The single most important thing to understand about Rwenzori weather is that "dry season" here does not mean dry. This is one of the wettest mountain ranges in Africa, and it stays wet in every month of the year — what changes between seasons is the amount of rain, not its presence.

Why this range is so wet

The Rwenzori sits close to the equator and rises steeply from lowland to over 5,000 metres, which forces moist air upward and produces heavy, persistent rainfall across the range. This is a structural feature of the mountain's position and shape, not a bad-luck year — it is one of the reasons the range supports vegetation zones as lush as it does, and one of the reasons trekking here feels different from drier East African mountains.

Conditions by altitude zone

Montane forest (the lowest zone, on every route): warm, humid, and consistently wet underfoot regardless of season.

Bamboo and heather zones: cooler, with persistent mist and cloud a normal daily feature rather than an occasional one. Rain is frequent, and the ground holds water — this is where the range's characteristic bog begins.

Afro-alpine zone: colder still, with a wider daily temperature swing between the warmth of direct sun and the cold once cloud rolls in or the sun sets. Rain and mist remain common.

Nival zone (summit approach): cold, with snow and ice a permanent feature at the top of Mount Stanley regardless of time of year.Expect warm, humid conditions in the forest and nights below freezing at the high camps.

Rain patterns through the day

Many trekkers on East African mountains are used to mornings being clearer and afternoons bringing rain.Cloud tends to build through the morning and close in by early afternoon, so the clearest views are usually early. Rain, though, can arrive at any hour here.

Summit conditions

What this means for your trek
