Rwenzori Trekking Packing List
A Rwenzori packing list has to answer one question above all others: what happens when this gets wet, because on this mountain, most of it eventually will. Below is what to bring, organised by who carries it and why each item earns its place.
The short list
Waterproof jacket and trousers, warm insulating layers, sturdy waterproof boots (or gumboots — see our dedicated boots page), gaiters, warm hat and gloves, headlamp, a good four-season-rated sleeping bag, dry bags for anything that must stay dry, and a daypack with its own rain cover.
Footwear
This matters more here than on almost any comparable trek. See our dedicated boots and footwear page — the short version is that the Rwenzori's sustained bog makes standard waterproof hiking boots less reliable than many trekkers expect, and several experienced local guides work in gumboots for exactly that reason.
Waterproofs
A genuinely waterproof jacket and trousers, not merely water-resistant. Given how consistently wet this range is, this is not the place to compromise on quality to save weight or cost.
Layers
A base layer that manages moisture, a mid layer for warmth, and a proper insulating layer for camp and summit conditions. Because you will likely be wet at some point most days, layers that retain some warmth even when damp — wool and certain synthetics — perform better here than cotton, which does not.
Sleeping
A sleeping bag rated for genuinely cold, damp conditions, plus a liner if you tend to run cold. Given the realistic chance that hut or camp conditions are damp, a bag with reliable warmth-when-wet performance is worth prioritising over one that is simply lightweight.
Summit day kit
If you are attempting Margherita Peak: crampons, a climbing harness, and a helmet are required for the glacier section. We confirm exactly which technical items we provide and which you need to bring when you book, in good time for you to pack.Porter load limits and carrying arrangements are covered on our guides and porters page. As a general principle on Rwenzori-style trekking, you should expect to personally carry a daypack with the items you need through the day — water, waterproofs, camera, snacks — while porters carry the bulk of camping equipment and personal baggage. Some gear can be hired in Kasese, but availability and condition vary from season to season. Ask us before you rely on it. Do not assume specialist technical gear will be readily available and in good condition; where possible, bring your own.
What not to bring
Cotton clothing of any kind — it holds moisture and will not keep you warm once wet. Anything you are not prepared to have permanently muddy by the end of the trek.
