Safety on the Rwenzori

Trekking the Rwenzori carries real risks, and a serious operator states them plainly rather than glossing over them in favour of reassuring marketing language.

The real risks

Altitude. Margherita Peak reaches 5,109 metres, and altitude-related illness is a genuine possibility on any Rwenzori summit attempt, as on any high mountain. See our altitude and acclimatisation page for how this is managed.

Cold and wet, in combination. The Rwenzori's persistent rain and cold, particularly in the upper zones, creates a real risk of hypothermia if a trekker becomes wet and cannot warm up again — arguably a more everyday risk on this mountain than the more dramatic hazards people tend to worry about first.

River crossings and rockfall. Both main routes involve stream crossings and sections of loose or wet rock, particularly on summit approaches.Your guide will brief you on the sections of your route that need particular care, including river crossings and any loose or wet rock.

Glacier travel. The final section of a Margherita attempt crosses genuinely glaciated ground, with the associated crevasse and fall risks any glacier travel carries. This is managed with rope, harness and an experienced guide, and is the reason that section of the route is treated differently from everything below it.Our guiding teams carry a comprehensive first-aid kit and a means of summoning help from the mountain. We explain the arrangements for your specific route at the pre-trek briefing.Evacuation from the Rwenzori is on foot, assisted by the crew, down to the trailhead and onward to medical care in Kasese — there is no helicopter rescue on this mountain. Realistic timings from each camp are covered in your pre-trek briefing. This is not a detail we are willing to guess at or generalise from other mountains' procedures.

Turnaround criteria

A properly run mountain operation decides, in advance, the conditions under which a summit attempt is called off — rather than making that decision under pressure on the day, influenced by how much a client has already invested in reaching the top.Our turnaround criteria are agreed with you at the pre-trek briefing rather than discovered on the mountain: symptoms that do not improve with rest, weather closing the summit window, or passing a fixed turnaround time on summit morning.
