Rwenzori Trekking Routes
Two main trails reach the high Rwenzori, plus a handful of shorter and lesser-known routes that most Rwenzori resources online do not mention at all.
The two summit routes
The Central Circuit, from Nyakalengija, is the older and more established route, forming a genuine loop rather than an out-and-back trail. It carries our shorter non-summit treks as well as the eight-day Margherita Peak itinerary.
The Kilembe Trail, from south-west of Kasese, is generally the longer route to Margherita — nine days against the Central Circuit's eight — which buys a better acclimatisation profile at the cost of extra time. It carries several of our mid-length treks as well as the nine-day Margherita itinerary.
Neither route is objectively better. We have written a full, honest comparison naming who operates each trail and stating our own position, rather than telling you which to pick.
Shorter trails
Three further activities appear in Uganda Wildlife Authority's own tariff schedule and almost nowhere else online: the Bukurungu Trail, the Kazingo Trail, and Sebwe Falls. We are documenting all three from our own guides' knowledge before publishing route detail, rather than repeating secondhand information. If any of these is specifically what you are after, contact us directly — we can usually tell you more than what is currently written here.
For a broader look at short, non-summit options generally, see our page on short Rwenzori hikes.
Which route reaches which peak
Both main routes reach Margherita Peak, the range's highest point. Mount Baker and Mount Speke sit on or near the Central Circuit. The remaining, less-visited peaks — Emin, Gessi and Luigi di Savoia — are realistically only reached as part of a full multi-peak expedition rather than via either standard route alone.
Choosing
Start with how many days you have and whether a summit is the goal, then let the route follow from that — our difficulty page and trek finder can help narrow it down faster than reading every route page individually.
