Hike the Mountains of the Moon

Rwenzori trekking means climbing through rainforest, bog and glacier in under 30 kilometres, on Uganda's tallest mountain range. We run guided treks — from three-day hikes into the heather zone to the full ascent of Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres, Africa's third highest point.

Why this mountain is different

Most people arrive at the Rwenzori after considering Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is a volcano you walk up. The Rwenzori is an upfaulted block of rock on the Uganda–DR Congo border, and reaching its highest point means crossing bog, scrambling over wet rock, and finishing on a glacier with a rope on. You will meet very few other people. You will be wet for most of it.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects close to 1,000 km² on the Ugandan side — 99,600 hectares by UNESCO's own published figure — and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. You'll see that figure reported inconsistently elsewhere online; we'd rather cite the source than guess.

In exchange for the wet and the bog, you walk through five vegetation zones in a few days, past giant lobelias and tree heathers hung with lichen, into a landscape UNESCO describes as one of Africa's most beautiful alpine areas.

Our Rwenzori treks

Ten of the eleven treks we run, from a three-day walk into the heather to a twelve-day traverse of all six massifs. Only the last three reach Margherita Peak and its glacier — everything below that is walking and scrambling terrain, with no rope and no crampons.

3-Day John Matte Camp Trek

3 days · Central Circuit · Nyakalengija

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland

  • No technical ground

Difficulty

The shortest way to see the high mountain properly. You get above the forest into the heather, and you come back down. You do not see a glacier.

4-Day Mutinda Lookout Trek

4 days · Kilembe Trail · Kilembe

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland

  • No technical ground

Difficulty

The best non-summit trek on the mountain. A rock viewpoint above the valley, a short scramble at the end, and no altitude risk worth the name.

5-Day Mahoma Loop Trek

5 days · Mahoma trail · Nyakalengija

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland

  • No technical ground

Difficulty

A loop rather than an out-and-back, past Lake Mahoma. Quieter than either main circuit and barely written about anywhere online.

6-Day Hunwick's Camp Trek

6 days · Kilembe Trail · Kilembe

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland, Afro-alpine

  • No technical ground

Difficulty

Serious altitude on walking ground. You reach the lobelias and groundsels without ever needing a rope. For most people this is the sweet spot on this mountain.

6-Day Weismann Peak Trek

6 days · Kilembe Trail · Kilembe

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland, Afro-alpine

  • Summit
  • No technical ground

Difficulty

A genuine summit that needs no glacier work at all. The most under-sold trek in the Rwenzori market, and the right answer for a lot of people who assume Margherita is the only option.

6-Day Kibale Chimpanzees & Rwenzori Trek

6 days · Combination · Fort Portal route

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo

  • No technical ground
  • Combination

Difficulty

Chimpanzees in Kibale, then a short Rwenzori section. The mountain leg is deliberately modest — this is not a summit trip.

7-Day Rwenzori Trek & Gorilla Experience

7 days · Combination · Nyakalengija

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland

  • No technical ground
  • Combination

Difficulty

A short mountain leg plus gorillas in Bwindi. This involves a long drive between the two, and we will tell you exactly how long rather than skip past it.

8-Day Margherita Peak Trek — Central Circuit

8 days · Central Circuit · 5,109 m

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland, Afro-alpine, Nival — rock, snow and ice

  • Summit
  • Glacier · rope · crampons

Difficulty

The classic summit route, and the shorter of the two ways to Africa's third highest point. Less time to acclimatise than the Kilembe itinerary, which is the trade-off to weigh.

9-Day Margherita Peak Trek — Kilembe Trail

9 days · Kilembe Trail · 5,109 m

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland, Afro-alpine, Nival — rock, snow and ice

  • Summit
  • Glacier · rope · crampons

Difficulty

The same summit with an extra day of acclimatisation and considerably fewer people on the trail. If your schedule allows nine days rather than eight, take the nine.

12-Day All Peaks Expedition

12 days · Central Circuit · 5,109 m

Reaches

Montane forest, Bamboo, Heather & moorland, Afro-alpine, Nival — rock, snow and ice

  • Summit
  • Glacier · rope · crampons

Difficulty

The hardest thing we run, and the only trek here with prerequisites rather than recommendations attached to it.

Routes

Choosing your route

Two trails reach the high Rwenzori: the Central Circuit from Nyakalengija, and the Kilembe Trail from Kilembe. They start on opposite sides of the massif and suit different people. Neither is better — we have written a full comparison rather than telling you which to pick.

About us

Who we are

Rwenzori Treks is the Rwenzori specialism of Travelmonke Tours and Travel, a tour operator based in Kampala and licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB/RTT/TT/2025/101816).

The Central Circuit and the Kilembe Trail are operated by other established Ugandan companies. We are direct about that relationship rather than implying more than is true — it is the whole subject of the page below.

Add to your trip

Uganda beyond the mountain

Most people who come this far add something. These are the three that genuinely fit around a Rwenzori trek rather than turning it into a different holiday.

Rwenzori & Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth sits about 25 km from Kasese — the shortest add-on to any Rwenzori trek, and a genuine change of pace after a week on the mountain.

Rwenzori & gorilla trekking

Uganda's highest point and its mountain gorillas. A long drive between the two, which we build in as its own day rather than pretend away.

Rwenzori & Kibale chimpanzees

Kibale sits on the Fort Portal road to Kasese, so chimpanzee tracking fits into the journey rather than adding a detour to it.

Questions

Rwenzori trekking — frequently asked

Is Rwenzori trekking difficult?

Harder than most people expect, for four distinct reasons: sustained bog, exceptionally wet conditions in every month, steep fault-uplifted terrain, and — for a Margherita Peak summit specifically — glacier travel with rope and crampons.

Read our full difficulty guide

How much does a Rwenzori trek cost?

It depends on route, season and group size, and we're not quoting a headline figure while we confirm the current Uganda Wildlife Authority park fee tariff, which changed in 2026. Enquire and we'll send an accurate, dated breakdown.

See what's inside a trek price

Which route should I choose, Central Circuit or Kilembe Trail?

Neither is objectively better. The Central Circuit is shorter (8 days to Margherita Peak); the Kilembe Trail is longer (9 days) with a gentler acclimatisation profile and generally fewer other trekkers.

Compare both routes in full

When is the best time to trek the Rwenzori?

The Rwenzori is wet in every month of the year, so "drier season" here means less rain, not none. Two broadly drier windows are commonly cited, and we explain honestly why sources don't fully agree on which.
