Rwenzori Trekking FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we are actually asked, rather than a generic FAQ template padded out to look comprehensive.

Choosing a trek

How many days do I need? Our dedicated page on this walks through it properly, but roughly: three to four days for a genuine taste of the high Rwenzori without a summit, six for serious altitude on foot, seven to nine for Margherita Peak, twelve for the full range of six massifs.

Which route should I choose, Central Circuit or Kilembe Trail? Neither is definitively better — see our full comparison, which names who operates each trail and states our own position rather than telling you what to think.

Do I have to reach the summit to have a good trip? No, and for a lot of people a shorter, non-summit trek is genuinely the better choice — the vegetation and landscape most people remember longest sit well below the summit.

Difficulty and fitness

How hard is Rwenzori trekking, honestly? Harder than most people expect, for four distinct reasons covered on our difficulty page: the wet, the bog, the steep broken terrain, and — for Margherita specifically — the altitude and glacier travel.

Do I need technical climbing experience? Only for Margherita Peak's final glacier section. Every other summit and trail in the range is walking and scrambling terrain.

Cost and booking

What does a trek cost? See our cost breakdown page. We are not currently publishing specific prices while we confirm the operator relationship and current park fee tariff — enquire directly and we will give you an accurate, dated figure.

Why can't I see prices on the website yet? Because Uganda Wildlife Authority's park fee tariff changed in 2026, and most operators online are still quoting the old figure. We would rather tell you honestly that we're confirming the current rate than publish a number we know might be wrong.

On the mountain

What are the huts or camps like? Basic, and — given how wet this range is — often damp. See our huts and camps page for what we're currently confirming about specific conditions on each route.

What's the food like? — we're confirming specifics before describing this in detail; see our food and water page.

Health and safety

Is altitude sickness a real risk? Yes, on any Margherita Peak attempt, as on any high mountain. See our altitude and acclimatisation page for how it's managed.

What happens if I can't continue?

Practicalities

What visa do I need? See our visas and entry page — we're only publishing confirmed, current information given how much is at stake in getting this wrong.

Can I add gorilla trekking or a safari? Yes — see our Uganda tours section for genuine Rwenzori combinations we offer.

Have a question not answered here? Ask us directly rather than guessing from general trekking advice elsewhere — a lot of what applies to other mountains genuinely does not apply to this one.
