The Rwenzori Central Circuit
The Central Circuit is the older and more established of the Rwenzori's two main trekking routes, starting at Nyakalengija near Kasese and forming a genuine loop rather than an out-and-back trail. It is the classic way onto the high Rwenzori and the route our shorter, non-summit treks are built around, as well as the eight-day Margherita Peak itinerary.
Where it starts
Nyakalengija, also the site of the national park's headquarters. This is where park entry is processed and where the trail proper begins, climbing into montane forest almost immediately.
The shape of the route
Unlike a there-and-back trail, the Central Circuit loops through the high Rwenzori, passing beneath or near several of the range's massifs — including Mount Baker and Mount Speke — before reaching the Stanley Plateau area for those continuing to Margherita Peak. Trekkers not summiting can complete shorter sections of the loop and return without covering the whole route.
Terrain and conditions
The Central Circuit passes through all five of the park's vegetation zones on longer itineraries: montane forest at the start, bamboo, heather and moorland, the afro-alpine zone with its giant lobelias and groundsels, and finally bare rock, snow and ice for those continuing to the summit. The bog in the upper heather and alpine zones is a defining feature of this route, as it is everywhere on the Rwenzori — expect saturated ground for extended stretches regardless of season.
We would rather this section stay short than risk publishing a figure we have not checked ourselves.
Who operates it
The Central Circuit has long been associated with Rwenzori Mountaineering Services as the established operator on this side of the range. How our own treks connect to the trail operators is covered in full on our page explaining how Rwenzori trekking actually works.
Treks using this route
Our 3-day John Matte Camp trek, 5-day Mahoma Loop trek, and 8-day Margherita Peak trek all use the Central Circuit. See our full route comparison for how it stacks up against the Kilembe Trail if you are deciding between the two.
