The Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori is a range of mountains on the border between western Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, running roughly 120 kilometres along the edge of the Albertine Rift. Its high point, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, is 5,109 metres — the third highest point in Africa.

It is snow-capped, glaciated, permanently wet, and almost on the equator.

Six mountains, not one

The Rwenzori is not a single peak with slopes running off it. It is six distinct massifs — Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Gessi and Luigi di Savoia — each carrying its own crown of summits, separated by valleys deep enough that moving between them is a day's work.

That structure is the consequence of how the range formed. It is not a volcano. It is a block of ancient rock pushed upward along faults at the edge of the rift, which is why the terrain is steep and broken rather than conical, and why Africa's third, fourth and fifth highest peaks all sit within a few kilometres of one another.

The park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects nearly 100,000 hectares of the Ugandan side, roughly seventy per cent of it above 2,500 metres. It became a national park in 1991 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It is also a Ramsar site.

Between 1999 and 2004 it was on the List of World Heritage in Danger, following regional insecurity and armed occupation. It came off that list in 2004, and much of what makes trekking here possible today was rebuilt afterwards.

What it looks like up there

This is the part that is genuinely hard to convey and the reason people choose the Rwenzori over easier mountains.

You start in closed rainforest and end on ice, passing through five distinct vegetation zones in a few days. In the middle, above the bamboo, the landscape stops looking like anywhere else. Tree heathers grow to the height of houses, with rust-coloured peeling bark and pale lichen hanging off them in the mist. Above that, giant groundsels stand like small trees and giant lobelias rise in columns out of the moss.

The World Heritage assessment calls this the richest montane flora in Africa and describes the plants as the continent's botanic big game. That is not marketing language — it is the technical assessment, and it is accurate.

The ground between the plants is bog, and it stays bog.

The Mountains of the Moon

Around AD 150 the geographer Ptolemy described a snow-capped range in the African interior feeding the Nile, and called it the Mountains of the Moon. Seventeen centuries later Henry Morton Stanley reached this range, recorded the name "Ruwenzori", and confirmed that equatorial meltwater from these slopes does indeed reach the Nile.

Whether Ptolemy was describing this specific range is unprovable. The name stuck anyway.

Trekking here

Two main trails reach the high Rwenzori: the Central Circuit from Nyakalengija, and the Kilembe Trail from south-west of Kasese. Shorter walks reach the forest and lower alpine zones. Reaching Margherita takes most people between seven and nine days, and the final section involves glacier travel with rope and crampons.

The range receives a small fraction of Kilimanjaro's visitors. Partly that is the Danger List years and the slower development that followed. Mostly it is that the Rwenzori is harder, wetter and less comfortable, and does not market itself.

Which is, for a certain kind of trekker, the entire appeal.

The people

The Bakonzo have lived on these slopes for generations, and guiding and portering on the mountain is largely their work. The park is often cited as a model for building cultural values into protected-area management — UNESCO's documentation describes the approach as the first of its kind in Africa.

Whoever you trek with, the people walking with you are from the villages at the bottom of the mountain, on ground their families have known far longer than any of the names on the map have existed.
