Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a unique and captivating destination in Tanzania, offering a completely different experience from the classic savannah safaris of the north. As part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, it is a biodiversity hotspot and is renowned for its trekking opportunities, rare endemic species, and stunning waterfalls.

A Hiker’s Paradise

Unlike other national parks in Tanzania, Udzungwa has no roads, making it accessible only on foot. This makes hiking the park’s primary activity. Trails range from short, easy walks to multi-day expeditions, catering to all fitness levels.

  • Sanje Waterfalls Trail: This is the most popular hike, a half-day trek that leads you through the forest to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, which cascade 170 meters into a misty pool. You can swim in the refreshing plunge pools at the top of the falls.
  • Mwanihana Peak: For a more challenging adventure, this multi-day trek takes you to the summit of Mwanihana Peak, one of the highest points in the Udzungwa Mountains. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Kilombero Valley.

A Sanctuary for Endemic Species

Udzungwa is a place of extraordinary biodiversity, with many plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. It is particularly famous for its primates, earning it the nickname “the primate park.”

  • Primates: The park is home to 12 primate species, with five being endemic. The most notable are the Sanje crested mangabey and the Iringa red colobus, both of which are found only in the Udzungwa Mountains. The mangabey was famously undiscovered by biologists until 1979.
  • Unique Wildlife: Beyond primates, the park’s diverse habitats—from tropical rainforest to miombo woodland—are home to unique animals like the Udzungwa forest partridge and the grey-faced sengi, a type of elephant-shrew. While large animals like elephants, leopards, and buffalo are present, they are more elusive due to the dense forest.

A Focus on Forest and Waterfalls

A visit to Udzungwa is a sensory experience focused on the sounds and sights of the forest. The constant sound of flowing water and the sightings of colorful butterflies and a rich variety of birdlife are hallmarks of the park. It is a perfect destination for those who want to slow down, immerse themselves in nature, and discover a side of East Africa that is wild, ancient, and deeply serene.
