Rhino tracking in East Africa

Rhino tracking in East Africa is a specialized and highly rewarding safari experience that offers a more intimate encounter with these critically endangered animals. Unlike a traditional game drive where you view rhinos from a vehicle, tracking allows you to approach them on foot, guided by expert rangers. This activity is a crucial part of conservation efforts and is primarily offered in dedicated sanctuaries.

Rhino Tracking in Uganda

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the sole place in Uganda where you can track rhinos in the wild.

  • The Experience: Ziwa is a private, not-for-profit sanctuary dedicated to reintroducing rhinos to Uganda’s wilderness after they were poached to extinction in the 1980s. The experience involves a guided walk with experienced rangers who track the rhinos by foot. Once located, you are able to get within a safe viewing distance to observe and photograph these magnificent animals as they graze.
  • What to See: The sanctuary is home to a growing population of southern white rhinos. Besides the rhinos, you can also see other wildlife, including a variety of antelopes, monkeys, and over 300 species of birds, including the rare Shoebill.
  • Logistics: Ziwa is conveniently located along the main highway to Murchison Falls National Park, making it a popular and logical stopover for travelers heading north. The tracking session typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the location of the rhinos.

Rhino Tracking in Kenya

Kenya is a leader in rhino conservation and offers a few unique tracking experiences, primarily in private conservancies.

  • Sera Community Conservancy: Located in northern Kenya, Sera is the only place in East Africa where you can track black rhinos on foot. This is a truly unique and raw adventure. The animals are monitored by rangers using radio collars, and the tracking team uses radio signals to locate them. Once the rhinos are found, you approach them quietly on foot, with a ranger to ensure your safety. The experience directly contributes to the community-owned conservation efforts.
  • Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: While not a typical “tracking” experience in the same way as Sera or Ziwa, Lewa offers some of the best opportunities to see both black and white rhinos. The conservancy is a vital sanctuary and has a very high concentration of rhinos, so sightings are almost guaranteed during a game drive. Some lodges within the conservancy offer guided walking safaris that may lead to rhino sightings.

The Importance of Rhino Tracking

Participating in a rhino tracking safari is more than just a wildlife viewing activity. The fees paid by visitors directly fund the intensive anti-poaching and conservation programs that are essential for the survival of these endangered species. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges of rhino conservation and to play a small part in the global effort to protect them.
