Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a small but significant wildlife reserve that serves as a haven for impalas and other species. Established in 1992, the sanctuary spans just 0.4 square kilometers, making it one of Kenya’s smallest protected areas. Despite its size, it plays a crucial role in conservation and education.

Wildlife and Attractions

The sanctuary is home to a captive population of impalas, which are the park’s namesake. Other animals include zebras, buffaloes, hippos, and vervet monkeys. The sanctuary also has a small zoo housing rescued animals like leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Birdwatchers can spot over 100 bird species, including fish eagles and kingfishers.

Activities

  • Walking Safaris: Unlike larger parks, visitors can explore on foot, offering a more intimate wildlife experience.
  • Boat Rides: Short trips on Lake Victoria provide views of hippos and water birds.
  • Picnicking: Designated areas near the lakefront make it a relaxing spot for families.

Conservation Role

The sanctuary acts as a rehabilitation center for injured or orphaned animals, particularly impalas. It also educates local communities and visitors about wildlife conservation.

Accessibility

  • Location: Just 3 km from Kisumu city center, making it easily accessible.
  • Entry Fee: Approximately $15 for international tourists, with discounts for residents and citizens.
