Albert Peak

Albert Peak is one of the prominent summits in the Rwenzori Mountains, located on the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo border. Standing at approximately 5,088 meters (16,690 feet), it’s the second-highest peak in the range after Margherita Peak and is part of Mount Stanley’s massif. Albert Peak is a popular but challenging destination for experienced climbers seeking a quieter alternative to Margherita while still enjoying breathtaking alpine views and dramatic glaciers.

About Albert Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains

Albert Peak forms part of the legendary Mountains of the Moon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rugged terrain, permanent snow, and unique ecosystems. Climbers who tackle Albert Peak experience steep rock faces, icy conditions, and technical climbing sections that require ropes, crampons, and good mountaineering skills. The route often follows the same trails used for Rwenzori trekking toward Margherita Peak before branching off to Albert.

Why Choose Albert Peak
  • Less Crowded Alternative: Compared to Margherita Peak, Albert offers a more secluded climb with fewer trekkers.
  • Technical Challenge: Its ascent is slightly more technical, making it attractive to experienced mountaineers.
  • Spectacular Views: From the summit, climbers are rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the Rwenzori range, glaciers, and the surrounding Albertine Rift Valley.
Tips for Climbing Albert Peak
  1. Physical Preparation: Train for endurance and altitude. Albert Peak is high-altitude and physically demanding.
  2. Hire Experienced Guides: Local guides familiar with the Rwenzori terrain are essential for safety and navigation.
  3. Gear Up Properly: Bring crampons, ice axes, ropes, and layered clothing to handle freezing conditions.
  4. Choose the Best Season: Climb during the dry months—June to August or December to February—for safer and clearer conditions.
  5. Permits: Obtain trekking permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority as part of your Rwenzori Mountains hiking plans.

Albert Peak is a stunning option for adventurers who want to explore the less-traveled heights of the Rwenzori. Whether as a primary goal or as part of a broader Rwenzori trekking expedition, summiting Albert Peak is a thrilling way to experience Uganda’s wild and spectacular Mountains of the Moon.
