The Rwenzori Central Circuit trails, managed by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services, is the oldest and most community-oriented trail, promoting development and responsibility in the society. The more recently established Kilembe Trail, managed by Rwenzori Trekking Services, is a private company providing a unique, green experience and beautiful huts for overnight stays, although it may be more expensive than the old trail. If seeking a luxurious Rwenzori trekking tour, the RTS – Kilembe trail is our highest recommendation.

Mount Stanley is located in the stunning Rwenzori Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Kasese, between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At an elevation of 5,109 metres, it is the third highest peak in Africa, behind Kilimanjaro (5,896 metres) and Mount Kenya (5,199 metres). If you choose to embark on a trek of the Rwenzori Mountains from the Congo, you should always summit Mount Stanley via the Uganda side. Our trips can be tailored to start from either Uganda or the Congo, depending on your preferences.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a British explorer renowned for his search for Dr. Livingstone, named Mount Stanley in 1888 after sighting the Rwenzori Mountains. On June 18, 1906, the Duke of Abruzzi, J. Petigax, C. Ollier, and J. Brocherel were the first to climb to the peak, where they found the Stanley Plateau, the largest mass of ice in the Rwenzori Mountains and over a kilometer in length.

The highest summit is Margherita Peak, which can be accessed through a climb through the Elena Hut, then up to the first rocks, across the snow and ice Stanley Plateau, and then up the Margherita Glacier to the Col between Margherita Peak and Alexandra Peak. To the south sits another cluster of peaks, topped by Savoia Peak (4977 m.), that offer hikers an incredible experience of tropical glaciers. Climbing any of these peaks is sure to be a memory that will be savored by all!
