Mount Gessi

Mount Gessi

Head out on an awesome mountaineering tour to Mount Gessi in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. It’s near Mount Emin, to the north of Mount Stanley, Speke, and Mount Baker. It was named after the Italian explorer Romulo Gessi who was credited with discovering the source of the Nile. This peak has two summits, Lolanda at 15,470 ft. and Bottego at 15,418 ft., and there’s only a narrow valley separating it from Emin.

Starting off at Mugusu Valley, you’ll be hiking through the ground forests before you reach Roccato pass. After that, you’ll be walking through the thick brush and slabs before getting to the ridge between the two peaks. These peaks used to be all covered in glaciers, but it’s all melted away now. The ascent route the Duke used to take is no longer there, and it’s been replaced by some pretty slippery and mossy slabs, so it’s probably best to avoid this route if you’re a beginner hiker embarking on a Rwenzori Trek.
