Central Circuit Trail

The Rwenzori Central Circuit trail is the same route that was taken by the Duke of Abruzi on their 1906 expedition to the Rwenzori Mountains national park. It’s the oldest trail in the region and has been used by tons of hikers to make it to the Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley. The trail starts from Mihunga and takes you past Nyabitaba, up the Bujuku valley, and on to the peaks. You’ll then go over Scott Elliot Pass to Kitandara Lakes and Freshfield Pass to the Mubuku Valley.

It’s managed by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services, a local company that partners with Rwenzori Expeditions and earns commission from anyone who books a trek with RMS. The trail is rough and muddy in many places, but those in charge are working to make things better – they’re constructing new huts in 2022 to accommodate more climbers.

We offer Rwenzori trekking and climbing tours on this route and you’ll get to see Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and sometimes the Weismann peak. The shortest tour is the Nature Walk around Lake Mahoma and the summit to Margherita peak on Mount Stanley. This trek usually takes 4-5 days, but adding extra days to visit more peaks is recommended.

If you’re up for an adventure, the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail is the perfect place for you! It’s quite bumpy and full of deep mud, but it’s well-maintained despite the weather and conditions. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has set up huts in the mountains for climbers and they’re planning to build more to accommodate even more visitors. You’ll get to take in stunning views of Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and sometimes even the Weismann Peak.
